Pounds Per Pleasure is a practical method of assessing whether an individual is and how that individual can expend other resources in order most effectively convert them into happiness.

It depends on a number of key assumptions :-

  1. That Joy is a delta of Happiness, eg. That lots of small events of joy can 'integrate' into an increase of happiness or h = ʃ f(j)dj where the interval is [0,t].

Pseudo mathematics aside it basically means if you experience several instances of joy your base happiness will increase, a counter effect if you experience several instances of despair your sadness will increase which will neutralise your happiness.

  1. It is possible for an individual to quantitively rate how much joy they are experiencing at a given moment, this will be a subjective scale but needs to be expressed a number between -5 and 5.
  2. It is also possible for an individual to quantify how much resource i.e. being expended to achieve the level of joy, primary resources such as time and financial expenditure are easier to calculate, other resources such as social investment are harder to assess but not so not need to be taken into account for a basic measure.

There are some other aspects to consider :-

  1. The logarithmic nature of the cost of increased quality both in terms of experience and products.
  2. The PPP standard that an individual will accept and how this evolves overtime is very subjective and can be restrictive to the freedom of the individual.
  3. PPP can be distorted by the effects of the Love what you do approach to experience.

The PPP can be expressed as a quotient between -1 to +1 or as a percentage between -100% and 100%.
