Counterself Concept

The counterself is a general collective of mental structures that acts against the current wishes of the self.

It is not necessarily bad because the wishes of the self may be unwise or counter survival but it usually manifests as a negative influence, preventing something that the Me thinks they should or wants to do. It can of course act to encourage the Self to do something, like for example, eat a donut or run away from a Tiger, when the self wants to diet or bravely fight the Tiger to impress someone, but it is easier conceptually to view it from the point if stopping the Me rather then sensibly encouraging the Me to do something as it avoids confusion as to who is driving you or the inbuilt safety systems of the vehicle.

So what actually is the counterself?

Well it has many elements with the exact mix changing from person to person and also evolving overtime. It is also possible to edit and update the counterself through exercise and force of will, but probably never possible to eliminate it. It would in fact be dangerous to eliminate it as its an essential component of survivability and no ruler no matter how competent should really rule without advisors.

The elements of the counterself map to the onion layers of the self and include:

  1. The Soul
  2. Autonomous Biological Reactions
  3. The Instinctual Genetic Level
  4. The Epigenetic and Cross Evolution Level
  5. The Energetic Efficient Animal
  6. The Inner Child (Start Point)
  7. The Outer Child (Interaction Point)
  8. The Conceptual Egostate Framework
  9. The Specific Egostate Framework
  10. Transition Egostate Models
  11. The Supraagnostic Break Effect
  12. Life Cul-de-sac Traps
  13. The attention span effect
  14. The Inertia Effect
  15. The Reward-mitigation effect

Some of these concepts are also layers in the Humans are like Onions conceptual model.
